Austin Stages Premiere New Playwrights and Performers This Month
Austin stages are turning to new playwrights and performers for a string of original works opening this month.
How we reported this

A half-dozen new plays by Austin-based writers under 30 open across the city in the next two weeks, giving local audiences an early look at the performers and creators expected to shape the next decade of Texas theater.
The timing lines up with a rebound in small-venue bookings after several national tours skipped Texas dates this spring. Local producers report that ticket demand for original work has climbed steadily since 2024, when several East Austin black-box spaces reopened at full capacity. That shift has pushed artistic directors to clear slots for untested scripts rather than repeat national titles.
Venues backing the newcomers
Hyde Park Theatre on 43rd Street will host the world premiere of “Cedar and Salt” by 27-year-old playwright Lena Ortiz beginning July 18. Two blocks south, the Dougherty Arts Center on Barton Springs Road has scheduled three nights of solo performance pieces by recent University of Texas graduates. Both houses keep ticket prices at or below $30, a deliberate choice to draw younger crowds who have filled the 90-seat rooms for similar debuts in the past year.
Numbers behind the push
City of Austin cultural funding data released in May showed a 22 percent rise in grants awarded to companies with budgets under $250,000 compared with 2023. The same report listed 48 new works staged in Austin in 2025, up from 31 the year before. Producers at both Hyde Park Theatre and the Dougherty Arts Center say the increase in grant dollars has covered rehearsal space and basic marketing, allowing them to pay writers and actors modest stipends that were rare three years ago.
Anyone wanting to catch the shows can buy tickets directly through each venue’s website or at the door starting at 7 p.m. on performance nights. The Hyde Park run continues through August 2, while the Dougherty programs wrap July 27.
