New drop-in nature programs at Mueller Lake Park started last month and already list 180 families on the waitlist for July sessions.
The shift comes as Mueller fills in with 1,200 new residential units completed since 2024, pushing parents to seek structured outdoor time closer to home instead of driving across town for weekend activities. City records show the neighbourhood population under age five rose 22 percent in the same period.
The Thinkery now runs a twice-weekly outdoor science series at its Mueller campus on Simond Avenue, adding water-table experiments and native-plant walks that were not offered two years ago. Across the street, Austin Parks and Recreation added four new shaded picnic shelters at Mueller Lake Park in March and began offering parent-led stroller hikes every Tuesday at 9 a.m. Both changes respond to complaints from residents on nearby Aldrich Street about limited shade and seating for toddlers.
Enrollment data from the Thinkery shows 312 children registered for its summer Mueller sessions, up from 214 in 2024. The city charges $28 per child for the four-week lake program, with an optional $12 add-on for a reusable activity kit sold at the park office.
Families who want a spot in the August lake hikes can sign up online through the Austin Parks and Recreation portal starting July 15. Those preferring indoor backup options can check the Thinkery calendar for its new evening parent meetups that begin in September on the second Wednesday of each month.
