Austin residents have logged record visits to nearby green spaces in the first week of July 2026, with trail counters at several sites showing daily foot traffic above 4,000 people.
July marks the peak of the local summer season when families and workers seek short drives rather than long-haul travel. City records indicate that park attendance rose 12 percent compared with the same period last year, driven by the combination of school break and steady 98-degree afternoons.
The Barton Creek Greenbelt, accessed from trailheads along Loop 360 near the 2900 block, draws hikers and swimmers to its shaded limestone pools. McKinney Falls State Park, located off US 183 south of the airport, offers two waterfalls and 3.6 miles of marked paths that stay open until 10 p.m. on weekends.
Both sites sit within a 20-minute drive of central Austin neighborhoods. The Greenbelt entrance at the Gus Fruh access point on Barton Hills Drive requires a $3 daily parking pass purchased through the City of Austin app. McKinney Falls charges $6 per adult vehicle entry, with the fee covering up to four occupants through the end of August.
Recent rain totals of 1.8 inches in the Hill Country have kept creek levels steady, though the Parks and Recreation Department closed one Greenbelt crossing near Sculpture Falls on July 9 after minor erosion.
Visitors should check the City of Austin Parks website each morning for heat advisories and water-level updates. Carry at least two liters of water per person and start hikes before 9 a.m. to avoid the strongest sun. Parking lots at both the Greenbelt and McKinney Falls fill by 10 a.m. on Saturdays, so arriving early or using nearby bus route 30 remains the most reliable option.
Those planning weekday outings can reserve a spot through the state park reservation system up to 30 days ahead. The next available weekend slots at McKinney Falls open for booking on July 15 at 8 a.m.
