Austin ISD approved $12.5 million in facility upgrades for high school athletic venues on July 8, with work set to begin at two campuses this fall.
The timing aligns with a 15 percent rise in student-athlete registrations since 2023, pushing existing fields and courts beyond capacity during peak seasons. City planners note that older infrastructure built before 2010 cannot support current schedules without added lighting, seating and drainage systems.
Work at Austin High School on East 2nd Street will include a resurfaced track and new bleachers for 1,800 spectators. Three blocks away, the district will install LED lighting at the baseball diamond shared with nearby charter programs. In the Allandale neighborhood, McCallum High School will receive a renovated gym floor and added storage for equipment used by its volleyball and basketball teams.
These sites sit within the Austin ISD Athletics Department footprint that also coordinates with the Parks and Recreation Department on shared fields near the Mueller development. Local coaches report that the upgrades will cut travel time for teams that previously practiced at distant middle-school sites.
District records show 8,400 high school athletes used Austin ISD venues last year, up from 7,300 in 2022. Average daily field usage reached 92 percent during spring sports, prompting the bond allocation that includes $3.2 million for drainage at four additional campuses. Construction bids close August 15, with the first phase expected to finish by March 2027.
Parents can check the Austin ISD athletics website for updated practice calendars once the new facilities open. Registration for fall sports begins July 20 at each campus athletic office.
