The Barton Hills Pacers finished first in the team category at the July 9 Lady Bird Lake 8K, with four members crossing under 32 minutes and securing the club trophy for the second straight year.
The result arrives as Austin sees a spike in organized group training during the hottest stretch of summer. Local clubs report higher turnout for early-morning sessions before temperatures climb past 90 degrees, and the Pacers have used that window to add 28 new members since Memorial Day.
Most weekday workouts start at the south end of Zilker Park near the baseball fields, then loop the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail before finishing on the gravel paths behind the Umlauf Sculpture Garden. Weekend long runs often begin at the corner of South Congress and Elizabeth Street, where the group gathers outside Jo's Coffee at 5:45 a.m. to beat the heat.
Club president Sarah Kline, who has run with the group since 2019, said the routes stay inside city limits to keep logistics simple and to support nearby businesses that offer post-run discounts.
Entry lists from the Austin Parks and Recreation Department show the Pacers fielded 47 runners across the June and July events, up from 31 last summer. Individual race entry fees average $28 this season, and the club covers half that cost for members who volunteer at packet pickup. Average weekly mileage logged by the top ten Pacers now sits at 48 miles, according to training logs shared on the club's private Strava group.
Next on the calendar is the August 2 Mueller Lake Park 10K, where the club aims to defend its team title. New members can sign up through the Pacers website or at the Tuesday night track session at the McCallum High School field starting at 6 p.m.
