Austin day-trippers logged more than 45,000 visits to city-managed trailheads during the first week of July, according to the Austin Parks and Recreation Department.
The spike comes as temperatures climb and travelers weigh shorter drives over longer trips. Local trail counters at Lady Bird Lake and the Barton Creek Greenbelt both posted record single-day counts on July 4.
The 10-mile Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail around Lady Bird Lake stays busy from sunrise until after sunset. Parking lots near Auditorium Shores fill by 8 a.m. on weekends. A few miles west, the Barton Creek Greenbelt access point at 1601 Spyglass Drive offers shaded swimming holes and limestone cliffs. Rangers at the Zilker Park visitor center report handing out 300 trail maps each weekday this month.
McKinney Falls State Park, 13 miles southeast of downtown, added 120 new parking spaces last spring to handle overflow. Entry costs $6 per adult on weekdays and $7 on weekends. The park recorded 18,400 visitors in June, up 12 percent from the same month in 2025.
The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Travis County through July 12, with afternoon highs forecast at 103 degrees. Austin Energy logged a new single-day peak demand record on July 9. Park staff recommend starting hikes before 7 a.m. and carrying at least two liters of water per person. Free water refill stations operate at the Lady Bird Lake boardwalk and at the McKinney Falls lower falls lot.
Reservations for shaded picnic shelters at Zilker Park can be made online through the Austin Parks portal up to 30 days ahead. The department also runs a free shuttle from Republic Square to the Barton Springs Road trailhead on Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day.
