College club sports programs in Austin added 420 new members this spring across five universities and community colleges.
The increase comes as students return for summer sessions and families seek affordable group activities before the fall semester starts. Rising housing costs in central Austin have pushed many participants to look for low-fee outlets that also create regular social contact outside classrooms.
The University of Texas club soccer team practices twice weekly on the fields behind Clark Field and now runs a monthly pickup league open to non-students at the nearby Rosewood Neighborhood Park. Austin Community College rowing club launches boats from the dock at Lady Bird Lake near Cesar Chavez Street and pairs novice rowers with longtime residents who live in the Holly District. Both groups list member names on shared spreadsheets so neighbors can carpool or split equipment costs.
Club records show average attendance at weekly sessions reached 87 people in June, up from 71 the previous year. The UT soccer group charges $85 for a full summer pass that covers field time, referee fees and two community cookouts at the park. The rowing club sets dues at $110 per term and includes free use of life vests and oars stored at the boathouse.
Registration for the August session opens online July 18 at each club website. People can also stop by the UT rec desk on 27th Street or the ACC Eastview campus office on Springdale Road to sign up in person before the first practice on August 3.
